Ask Nurse Cindy recently posted a video on hair loss while on a Ketogenic diet.  Please see her video below.  I thought I would take a moment and weigh in on this subject.

A few months after I started on Keto I went to my hairstylist for a haircut (or maybe it was for highlights and a cut – who knows? that was months ago, and I have slept since then – LOL).  She said to me “your hair is thinning” and she mentioned that could happen if you have a great weight loss.  I didn’t freak out. I just took it as, “I might need a supplement or something”.  I started taking Biotin every day, which is supposed to be good for your skin, nails, and hair.  So, I believe, with time my hair will start growing in thicker.

Cindy's curly hair In the Ask Nurse Cindy video, she mentions there can be several reasons for hair loss – one of which is weight loss – and others such as stress and illness.  I totally get the stress and the illness aspect of how they can affect your hair.  When I was young I had extremely curly hair (natural without the use of a perm), as you can see in this photo.  During a long illness and stress in my life (in my 40’s), my once curly hair went to wavy then to straight.  It has been straight ever since.

Along with the video is a link to DietDoctor.com where you will find an article regarding hair loss titled “Can low-carb diets result in hair loss?”  I hope both of these will help ease your mind if you are experiencing some hair loss as you are following a low-carb or keto WOL.
